Dancing Astronaut – EDM, trap, techno, deep house, dubstep
A large population of dance music fans have long ago written David Guetta off as a commercial sell-out. But despite the producer’s knack for radio smash hits, it’s a little ignorant to disregard Guetta’s extensive career that dates back to the early 90s – long before Martin Garrix or Skrillex had arrived. Obviously aware of his standing amongst the ever vocal electronic music critics, Guetta spoke with The Guardian to share his own perspective on the evolution of his career.
“When I started, all dance music was underground. If you were going to play house, you had to be underground because it wasn’t the type of music that was crossing over,” Guetta, who released his first song in 1990, was a major player in the underground scene in France. Long before his string of record-breaking and frustratingly catchy songs, he penned now ‘old school’ tunes that were distant from what he is known for now. (i.e. His 1990 release, “Nation Rap“). “My evolution also came with the evolution of the scene in general.”
But Guetta’s evolution was a unique one that propelled him forward when EDM was still mostly unheard of. He struck music gold in 2009 with a collaboration with the Black Eyed Peas that would eventually become (and remain) the world’s most downloaded song in the history of modern music. “[‘I Gotta Feeling’] really changed the game and opened the doors for dance music in America. They started to play it for the first time on the radio, so not only did I cross over, but my entire scene crossed over. It was pretty exciting.”
Though he remains rooted in the underground French scene, Guetta is conscious of his role in dance music now that EDM has become popular. Despite the fact that Guetta pioneered a more emotional path for his most recent album Listen, his most explosive response has been to “Hey Mama,” a radio-primed song with Nicki Minaj and Afrojack at the helm as well. “Even though I love lots of different music, you can see the party-record part of the album is really exploding. People like me for a certain thing.”
And as for what’s next, there’s no question that David Guetta will continue exploring new collaborations – a signature that he has mastered as the leading pop EDM icon. “I actually started a record with Hozier that’s really exciting. I thought ‘Take Me To Church’ was one of the best songs of last year, so we got together a long time ago to make a song and need to finish it. He’s really, really amazing.”
